As an enlisted ESL trainer for CAPTF, I can say that our country has broken our promise to provide security and help for our supposed new allies. We ran from the terrorists without thinking of others. Sadly, my students were either killed or forced to turn traitors to protect their families. Our expedient pullout solution was a disgrace to our ideals of creating a free and safe world. The same ideals are being broken by our sudden extradition policies that we are enacting today. Learning from the past seems like a concept the powerful just can not figure out. Trust isn't a concept that the silver spooned minority seems to understand. This saddens me.

SIVs need to be honored for those who directly assisted the United States. In turn, these people need to actively pursue a green card and citizenship and not expect TPS to last forever. It is “temporary” program as it is literally spelled out. Another problem happens when these people also want to bring their brothers, sisters, parents, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, best friends, and neighbors to the United States. We are grateful for their service, but TPS was never meant to last forever.

More personally my Church has been helping to raise funding for refugees from Afghanistan through Catholic Charities Maine. The Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine has also been doing a lot. Both are licensed resettlement agencies. They together have resettled over 200 Afghans (a drop in the bucket I know, but we are a small state population wise).

Apparently the biggest hurdle is finding property managers and landlords willing to take a leap of faith because these people don’t have a credit score. JCSM and CCM help with that. When a landlord is in your church or synagogue they are often willing to take that leap and just having a licensed agency backing the resettlement effort helps larger companies also take that leap.

Most families get settled in the greater Portland area but Brunswick has also been very welcoming and Waterville has a handful.

It is worth noting that Waterville and Brunswick are both college towns and that has been a help to promoting resettlement.

Some of them came to the Bay Area but we have a huge community of Afghan people here for them to join in, so I'm going to assume the people who settled here may have an easier time when they are joining an established immigrant community. I presume joining a group of 30k+ people in one city makes it a lot easier.

Many of them were placed in my neighborhood. They pushed out the gang bangers and drug dealers. The parks are almost always full of kids playing again. It's mostly been pretty great, but the hair salon that I used to go to got pushed out of their space by refugees harassing them. They'd been in that spot 20 years. So, it's not all good.

My wife is a school teacher, she has three kids this year who are afghan refugees. They are just people who are trying to live a new life in a foreign land.

Refugees get here, are transported to where their initial housing has been found, then simply assimilate. They go get jobs, find places of worship, make friends, etc. We do not specifically house them all in one neighborhood, or even in one city. They are scattered all throughout the US. Some will move as they find jobs, others will stay where they are first placed.

[Operation Allies Welcome](https://www.dhs.gov/allieswelcome) is a large-scale US Government interagency effort to resettle the Afghans who were supporting the US mission in Afghanistan directly.

They were first evacuated and placed in temporary shelters on USAF bases and US Army posts.  Quickly, many state governments cooperated and were honored to find homes for these families.  The adults received American credentials for those of equivalent professions, or they received retraining.  The kids got computers and were placed in schools with supports.  

This is still an ongoing mission, surpassing Red/Blue politics and receiving strong bipartisan support.

Keep in mind, these are the families of people who had bounties for helping US military and diplomatic missions in Afghanistan.  They had to leave everything they ever knew because of their support for us.

The largest group of resettled Afghans is in northern Virginia.  But Afghans have been resettled in 22 states.

They scattered and settled, my city in Oregon has a nonprofit that helps refugees and asylum seekers find housing, jobs, integrate with society, etc. The non-profit also runs a woodworking/furniture making business that teaches the skills to any newcomers who want to learn, and they sell the pieces they make to keep the program going. 

I'm happy to see them settle where I live, it makes our community stronger having Afghan, Ukrainian, and others become neighbors.

They got jobs and began living their new lives.  Most of the states where they were sent welcomed them warmly, and quite often there was a job waiting for them after going through a few weeks in refugee accommodation.

Honestly haven’t heard much from them either but I’m not in a major city. I’m guessing they don’t have a lot of money and the language barrier is a problem so probably swept under the rug &amp; forgotten about like the rest of our poorer communities.

Edit: My maybe controversial opinion.. This country has so many people and is so based on capitalism &amp; consumerism, we don’t really do as much of a good job as taking care of refugees or immigrants as Germany (took in a lot of Syrians 2014-2015 and Ukrainian’s recently due to the Russian war) and Canada. Some people may agree or disagree with it, but we as a nation don’t really believe in higher taxes to support people of lesser backgrounds as compared to other countries imo. It works for people crossing the southern border because people from Latin America have strong family values and are likely to have family/friends in major sun belt states (Southern California, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico) - and even if they don’t, Latino/Hispanic communities tend to be pretty tight knit and work together to bring themselves up for the most part. This country is based on individualism and consumerism. You can go from having $28 to your name to becoming a millionaire 10 years later in this country but it’s also possible to lose a lot of wealth in 1 generation. Once you’re here, it’s just kinda on you what you do.. that’s the American definition of freedom (to me) 🤷

Iran and the Taliban controlled Afghanistan aren't really on good terms. In summer 2023 there were clashes between the two over water issues over the Helmand River and Iran still hasn't recognized the Taliban as legitimate.

I feel sad for the refugees,but the IEA currently does the following:

- Allows the TTP and BLA safe havens
- Actively supports the TTP at times
- We regularly get into skirmishes on the border between FC and IEA
- They also say they don’t recognise the international border
- They also make claims to Western Pakistan

And then they expect us to recognise their state and government, host refugees, continue trade and don’t react when Pakistanis get killed by Afghan facilitated militants.

It’s absurd and can’t be allowed.

No country should ever tolerate refugees not respecting the host country or act as if their presence in the country without proper documentation whatsoever is their religious right because “all Muslim lands are my home country!” or drivel of similar nature.

Pakistan has great potential to become a true great power if it can rid itself of burdens like extremism and extremist aliens from extremist countries.

Also those “Pakistanis” (who probably refuse to call themselves Pakistanis and think their government is “kaffir” for attempting to enforce the law) who defend those illegals and even mock their own compatriots when they rightfully complain about lawless Afghans and equate it with criminal Pakistanis, to them I say: Assuming Pakistan has issues with local criminals, you then don’t need to import more of them!

This goes against my morals and feel sorry, but would never apologize to an Afghan for it as they have done far worse
